How large is large?

I often get asked about the size of our Large storage baskets. Mainly because on the website it is tricky to tell just how big the large is. Yes I could give you the exact measurements, but do you have  tape measure to hand? I can’t say that I carry one around, so I presume other people don’t either. So I thought an easier way to show you would be to put items inside.

The large basket with various toys in the bottoms.

I am a big cloth nappy fan, inside the basket here is 43 nappies, 26 thick fleece liners. There is still plenty of room, in fact I think I could get 80 nappies inside as well as various other cloth nappy bits and bobs.

Finally, as if that wasn’t enough, what about a child? Baby Emma inside the large basket.

Please note, no babies were harmed in the process of basket sizing.

Back to Work and still Breastfeeding

Today kicking off World Breastfeeding Week, we have the lovely Jennifer Dixon from My Mummies Pennies, giving her experiences of Breastfeeding and juggling returning to work….

When I had my son I really struggled with breastfeeding and ended up feeling like I’d let both him and myself down when I stopped after just two months.

Therefore with my daughter, 3 years later I was determined to take each day as it came, I would breastfeed for as long as I could but not put myself under too much pressure. I would be proud to have fed her for however long I could manage.

So as you can imagine, I was quite surprised when 11 months later, as I was getting prepared  to go back to work , I was still going strong and realised I’d still be feeding her when I returned to working eight hour days in the office.  I hadn’t planned for it but now I would have to figure out how I would combine being both a working mother and a breastfeeding one…

After chatting to friends and checking out some really useful websites, I built up the courage to call HR and was really surprised about how open and encouraging they were about the idea of me expressing in the office! I knew that as my employer, they had legal obligations but I had prepared myself for some resistance.

For a few weeks before I started back I arranged for a relative to take my daughter out for the afternoon so she was used to spending some time away from me and I could get expressing. By this point I had tried a few different pumps but hadn’t been able to produce more than a few ounces at a time until I invested in a double electric pump which felt so strange at first but soon I was pumping for England and the freezer started to fill up…

It wasn’t just work that I had been worried about but also my daughter’s childcare, after a long search I had found what I believed to be the perfect nursery, the facilities were great, the staff were friendly and approachable and they were happy to use cloth nappies and encourage BLW, but how would they react to me sending in bags of frozen breastmilk for my one year old daughter?  Would this be a step too far?

I needn’t have worried at all as they were great about it and really put my mind at rest by confiding that my daughter would not be the only child at nursery still nursing.

It wasn’t long before my maternity leave was over and my first day back at work had arrived! After dropping my almost one year old at nursery with no tears (from her anyway!) off I trotted to the bus stop, loaded up bags filled to the brim with my breastpump, milk storage bags, a cool bag with ice blocks and a spare top (just in case!)

It went quite smoothly and I actually enjoyed my ‘pumping time’ in the quiet room, it was time to reflect on my day and think about my children. I had thought that my colleagues may resent this time and as skiving, however their reaction was really positive and I found that a few of them had breastfed their children past a year too!

I continued to nurse my daughter until she self-weaned at 23 months and I know that the support I got on my return to working life helped this wonderful journey.

Celebrating Paddling Pool Weather

Last year we just didn’t seem to get many sunny days where a paddling pool was needed, but this year we seem to have an abundance of them and paddling pools are selling out everywhere! I hunted high (and low) for one, and can categorically state that if you are after one then check your local supermarkets, as this is where I picked my family sized one from with success.

Kids of all ages love the padding pool, but here are a few tips of ways to make it better:

Fill up your pool with water first thing in the morning, it then has all day to heat up so it isn’t too cold for the tiny ones.

Use some form of cover, this is vital I think. It stops bugs and leaves getting in at night and helps keep it fresh for the little people.

Are the kids bored after a few days? Liven it up and add a bag of balls (like the type you use for the ball pools), they will love having something new to do in there and of course it gives them a good clean too!

Have towels on standby. One on the floor is great for people to stand on, it helps stop grass getting into the pool from wet feet when they decide they wanna jump back in. Towels on standby to wrap the kids up in also fabulous, like our Cuddly Bunny Towel which is snug and absorbent and has the cute factor too!

Keeping baby cool in the Summer

The summer time is a nice break from the rain and clouds, but most of us will moan that it is too hot at some point. The little people in our lives also get hot and bothered, and sometimes even grumpy too. Having a baby in the summer you are worried if they are going to overheat as they cannot regulate their body temperature well, but I have found a nappy is all my baby needs to keep cool. Yes the pretty dresses are gorgeous, but she gets so hot in them, they are relegated to cooler days.

reversible liner towelling

Putting my baby in her pushchair I use the Minene reversible liner, it has a cotton side and also a towelling side. This is great for keeping the moisture away from Emma, it is white too which helps reflect the sun.

It also is great for popping in the wash after they have eaten in the pushchair, the crumbs seem to catch in the liner, so are easily shook out. It washes up lovely, and dries quickly too. They are universal fitting, and I have tried them in Stokke Xplory, Cosatto Yo! and maclaren strollers, and they all fit great. To keep them in place there is also an elastic strap which tucks round the back and stops it moving when you get your child in and out, it actually works!

They pop over the head, leaving legs free from dangling towels that could trip them up. The poncho design also means that you don’t have to worry about them staying around the little ones, it is one piece.  They are the perfect companion for bath time and poolside, they even have very cute ears and a hood too.

Pushchair Accessories

If like me you love your pushchair, then the chance to add something to it to make it better is very appealing. I have searched high (and low) for the best accessories, testing many over my 10 years of parenting. Some sound appealing but the reality is then a disappointment, but sometimes its something simple which has the best effect.

20130629_155214

People always ask me what clips I recommend for putting on the handlebars of pushchairs, it doesn’t matter how big your shopping basket is, there is always a need for more! The Minene Stroller Netbag is impressive. It comes in a small pouch, but it stretches out and can fit loads in. This means you can pop it in your bag and use it only when needed. It attaches with a simple clip, so literally takes a second to fit to a pushchair. I find this fantastic for storing the raincover in, as well as blankets, shopping, school run stuff…the list goes on!

These are available from www.minene.co.uk in 7 different colours, for £10.

Another question I get quite often is ‘Do you let your child eat in their pushchair?’. Yes I do. I wouldn’t starve my child just to keep my pushchair looking nice, but at the same time I am concious of the mess. The Reversible liner is fantastic for popping in the seat of whatever pushchair it is I am using that day. The cotton side is nice looking, it is available in five colours. But on the other side is cotton towelling, which I find amazing for the summer when little ones are hot, it really does adsorb moisture.  It has universal slits, so fits any pushchair.

The Reversible Liners are available for £16.00.

Finally, the Pushchair Sunshade, is perfect for jazzing your pushchair up, and for keeping the sun out of your babies eyes…

Getting out and about this summer

The past week has gone by in a blur of school runs and rainy days, but this Sunday I was determined to get out into the garden. The benefits of getting out into the fresh air are massive, not only does it provide natural Vitamin D but it helps perk everyone up a bit with a change of scenery. Even when it has been raining my kids love nothing better than popping their Wellington boots and raincoat on, and going outside to splash in as many puddles as they can find. I find for toddlers these suits are amazing at keeping their clothes dry, no matter how big the splashes are!

Pack Away Waterproof All-In-Ones £32.00

When taking the baby out into the garden it’s tricky to find a place to put her down safely. She is 6 months old and is no longer content with just sitting in a pushchair, she wants to be exploring!

The Portable Activity Mat is perfect for using outside, measuring a 135cm x 135cm, it has plenty of space for baby to explore.  It has a water resistant back which keeps your bottoms dry and the top is made from 100% cotton and even has toys attached. When you are finished with it you can simply pop it back into the bag that comes provided with it.

portable_activity_mat_reviewBut the uses are not just for outside, you can use it for inside too, particularly helpful when you are visiting friends, and especially for when your child gets to the feeding stage and you are don’t want to ruin your friends carpets. The great thing is the mat is completely machine washable, so it really doesn’t matter how much mess they make as you can pop it in the washing machine when you are done. This is a product that as a mum I adore, being able to protect my child from dirty floors, and protect my dirty children from clean floors, it has so many uses.  Fear not if pink isn’t your thing, there is other colours available too, including green, blue and my personal favourite, grey.

You can buy the Minene Portable Activity Blanket for £37.

The summer holidays are almost upon us in the UK, so over the next few weeks we shall be sharing some great activity and ideas to keep the little ones amused, watch this space!
